Baer’s Pochard Genetic Testing

There are ongoing conservation efforts worldwide to preserve the critically endangered Baer’s pochard. Pinola Conservancy is proud to be a part of those efforts. We recently collected DNA samples from our entire captive flock of Baer’s pochard as part of a collaborative effort with many zoological and private institutions to test the genetic purity and diversity of the entire U.S. captive stock of this little known, but no less important species of waterfowl. An ambitious endeavor indeed but thanks to everyone involved, we are just past 70% of the entire population tested!
