Great Tits Nesting

The great tit is a well known European passerine that are popular visitors to backyard feeders throughout their range. Their acrobatic antics are amazing to watch and their song is quite lovely. Though small in stature, they are known to be quite quarrelsome towards other garden variety birds, even those that double their size! We have several pairs here at Pinola and we currently have several active nests that are built inside artificial cavities; Eastern bluebird boxes to be exact. We have begun hand-raising a few, which we have learned is not an easy endeavor. They are altricial, meaning they are completely dependent on the parent, our staff in this instance, to feed them at constant intervals (every hour) throughout the day (6am-10pm). They do grow quickly and fledge at around 16-22 days. Our staff is doing a tremendous job with these delicate little chicks and we will keep you posted on their growth in the days to come! #breedingseason2020
