While this post may be a little late after the fact, we are no less proud to talk about the successful breeding of Hartlaub’s ducks at Prague Zoo in 2021! In 2020, Pinola Conservancy exported several pairs of Hartlaub’s ducks to European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) accredited zoos in order to augment the European population after it had become scarce in zoos and most private collections, much the same as it had in North America prior to our import efforts in 2015. Since then, Pinola Conservancy has put a great emphasis on breeding and reestablishing this species in captivity and can now proudly say that it has been a worldwide success! In fact, we recently sent several Hartlaub’s ducks to Singapore for the new Bird Paradise Bird Park, formerly Jurong Bird Park, in the hopes of continued success in both breeding and showing this little-known species to a global audience.
Thank you to Prague Zoo for sharing this news!
