Pinola’s First Greylag Nest!

Many people may not realize just how important the greylag goose is to history. Not only aviculturally but to human history as well. The greylag goose was one of the first species of any animal to be domesticated some 3000 years ago. Much of the domestic breeds of geese that so many of us started out with, and that many of you may still work with, derive from the greylag. Humans have been depending on this species, and it’s many domesticated forms, for meat and egg production for centuries. It’s also the source of many adult’s childhood-rooted fear of geese after having been chased by an angry goose at some park or farm in our early years! This culturally important bird is nesting at Pinola for the very first time and we are truly excited about that!
